Captain Coconut

Zack met Dan Knobler during freshman year at The Fieldston School and they quickly became friends and musical brothers, jamming often and playing gigs whenever and wherever they could find them with a number of other talented young musicians from Fieldston — including Matt Porter (keys) — and other NYC schools. With Dan as leader, this high-energy funk band took shape when they added three dynamite horn players from LaGuardia High School of Music and Art: Matt Chiasson (ts), Danny Rivera (bs) and Jonathan Saraga (tpt). Armand Hirsch, Greg Evans, Andrew Abramowitz, and Mike Mitchell were among the excellent Captain Coconut drummers.

By the time Zack and Dan were freshmen in college, the band had completed two albums of mostly original tunes — several penned by Zack — and had played dozens of gigs in and around New York, including at CBGB’s, the Knitting Factory, Tribeca Rock Club, weddings, private parties, even once at Gracie Mansion when it was occupied by Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

Zack’s compositions are marked with a ★.
