This gig, Zack’s last as a singer-songwriter, took place just two months before he ended his five-year battle with schizophrenia. In a way it is painful to watch because his inner struggle is apparent; but also apparent are the courage and fortitude he summoned in the face of his demons. Somehow Zack continued to perform up until just a few hours before he took his life, just two months later. That last gig was at Columbia, playing upright bass in a classical Turkish orchestra. After the concert, the leader gave him a check, praised his playing, and asked about his availability for a future performance.
